With
a strong Catholic population, it is not surprising that the churches in
Campeche are important buildings.
Campeche's
Cathedral is undergoing extensive renovations to restore it to its
original splendour in the main square. The Cathedral dates from 1639 to
1650, although there was a previous one built from 1541 to 1580.
Other
churches like San Francisquito continue to play an important social and
cultural role in the community in addition to giving the city character
and beauty.
