las cosas que queremos las podemos ir alcanzando si vamos juntos, unidos, si conjugamos esfuerzos, si hacemos a un lado egoísmos y nos interesamos por el bien de Campeche

Jorge Carlos Hurtado Valdez, Governor of the State of Campeche

"On Monday October 4, 1540, acting on the instructions of the captain general, Francisco de Montejo the Younger founded the municipality of San Francisco de Campeche. Ten years earlier, the Captain General had built Salamanca Plaza over the ashes of the colony of San Lázaro, which Francisco Hernández de Córdoba had established in 1517 in the province of Ah-Kin-Pech. Since its founding, the port city of Campeche has been closely connected with the sea, as a reference point for navigators and fortune hunters, a port of entry to the new world, a sanctuary where ancient mysteries and infinite beauty await the traveler.

At one time the best defended fortified city of the Americas and one of the most important ports on the continent, Campeche today provides an ideal setting for poetry and for experiencing the passionate celebration of life. The people of Campeche are distinguished by a natural propensity to good humour, candour, generosity and optimism....Over the course of our history, we have developed a singular culture firmly rooted in our Mayan and Spanish heritage and the deep sense of community values that is our great strength as people...

Our cultural heritage has much to offer: military, civilian and religious architecture from the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries that bears testimony to the splendour of Mexico's vice-regal era; and majestic archaeological sites such as Calakmul, Edzná, Becán, Xpujil and Chicanná, which reflect the pre-Hispanic wealth of our land."

L.A. Antonio González Curi, former Governor of the State of Campeche

Campeche was designated a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999

Campeche City is a member of the  Organization of World Heritage Cities

"The steps we have taken on our journey have run in parallel with the growing sense that there is more to the Americas than geography. A sense that we are more than just neighbours and friends. We are "Una Gran Familia." Each a proud individual nation to be sure. Secure in our unique identity and sovereignty. But at a higher level, a family. Who share aspirations and values. Who have embraced democracy, free markets and social justice. Who have taken enhancing the quality of life of all of our people as our common cause"

The Rt. Hon Jean Chrétien,  February 5, 2001
