Campeche is a green state with 525 kilometres of coastline
and a geographical area of 58,856 sq. km.
The Biosphere Reserve of Calakmul is situated in the south
east corner of the state sharing a border with Guatemala.
The
area of the Reserve encompasses the largest concentration of Mayan Ruins
in the Mundo Maya. In addition to the old Mayan city of Calakmul,
there are the La Muñeca ruins, Hormiguero and Balamkú. Just outside the
reserve there are several other ancient Mayan ruins.
Calakmul
City alone contains 6,750 ancient structures and the tallest pyramid in
Mexico.
In addition to the Mayan experience, Calakmul
is also home to countless species of plants and animals, which you can see
if you enter the park early in the morning.
European tourists have begun to discover this area of the
world and there is a nascent cultural and eco-tourism industry.
There are tremendous opportunities for Canadian firms wishing to invest in
this industry in the State of Campeche.
